Chapter 30: Devouring a Boss!
(Page 1/3)
Seeing the stats of the elite-level catfish monster, Chen Yun was left speechless. Just how weak was he? Look at this—its level was higher than his, its attack power was greater, its health points surpassed his, and while he didn’t even have a single combat skill, this thing had three! That was just too much to bear!
But what on earth was this “Slippery” skill? Was it going to conjure up a slide to play on or something?
“Xiao Wang, hurry up and catch the catfish,” Yu Zheng said.
“Alright, I’ll get it right away.” Rolling up his sleeves, Xiao Wang grabbed a net and lunged at the catfish, but the creature twisted its body nimbly, dodged the net, then leaped with surprising force—straight for the plate of freshly cooked food on the counter.
Watching the catfish pounce at the food, Chen Yun froze. Could it be that this catfish was a glutton, willing to risk its life just for a bite?
“Stop it! The master’s dish is worth a fortune—we can’t let a catfish ruin it!” President Zhang, who was standing near the food, turned pale. He grabbed a pot lid and hurled it at the catfish.
The catfish in midair was about to be struck by the lid when its tail whipped out in an unbelievable arc, knocking the lid straight to the ground! Chen Yun’s eyes widened as two green characters—“Tail Whip”—flashed above the catfish’s head.
What the—? The catfish just used a skill!
“How dare you ruin the master’s dish! You’re asking for it!” Yu Zheng snatched up a kitchen knife and swung at the onrushing catfish. But the expected scene of fish blood flying didn’t happen. From Chen Yun’s vantage point, he saw the green words “Slippery” flash above the catfish’s head. The chef’s knife merely grazed the creature’s skin, and a red number, -10, floated into the air.
This catfish was out of control. It had swatted away the pot lid and dodged the knife, and now it was about to land on the food. Everyone panicked, lunging at the catfish from all sides. But with too many people in the way, the ten-pound catfish managed to break through all obstacles and crashed heavily onto the plate of stir-fried tomato and eggs, gobbling up a huge mouthful.
What happened next left everyone stunned.
The catfish, which had been just over a meter long and weighed thirteen pounds, suddenly began to grow at an alarming rate. In a matter of seconds, it swelled to five meters in length and over sixty pounds in weight. With a sweep of its tail, it sent pots, bowls, and plates flying off the counter, and with another slap, it deformed the sturdy stainless steel countertop!

“Oh my god, the catfish’s turned into a demon! Run for your lives!” a kitchen worker shrieked and bolted for the exit.
“Attention, player Chen Yun: Due to the elite-level catfish monster’s consumption of the blue consumable ‘stir-fried tomato and eggs,’ it has entered an evolution state and transformed into a level 10 boss monster—Catfish Demon. All attributes have increased fivefold. Danger level: extreme. Proceed with caution.”
Chen Yun’s face went ashen at the notification. Now he finally understood what it meant when it said that monsters had a chance to trigger an evolution effect after using items. When he saw the catfish’s gaze turn on him, he was so frightened that he fell to the floor.
“Master Chen, are you alright?” President Zhang was also badly shaken. Seeing Chen Yun collapse, he hurried over to help him up, shouting, “Stop the Catfish Demon! Don’t let it hurt Master Chen! Call the police—have them handle it! Master Chen, we need to get you out—everyone out, close the door—no, lock it!”
“I’m fine... Let’s go,” Chen Yun, Zhang Lang, and the others stumbled out of the kitchen. Yu Zheng shut the door and locked it, glancing nervously at the Catfish Demon wreaking havoc inside. “Thank goodness the glass around the kitchen is bulletproof—otherwise...”
“What on earth is going on? Why did an ordinary catfish turn into a demon after eating Master Chen’s food?” Li Xinwei asked, legs trembling.
“This isn’t the time for discussion. Call the police and let them handle it. The Catfish Demon is too strong—the bulletproof glass won’t last long.” President Zhang watched as the demon pounded the glass, making it rattle ominously.
“I’ve called them—they said they’ll be here within five minutes.”
“Good. Just in case, Head Chef Yu, take a few people and keep an eye on the Catfish Demon. Report to me immediately if anything seems off. The rest of you, go and evacuate the customers. Master Chen, President Jiang values your safety above all—you should wait outside. Even if the hotel is destroyed, nothing must happen to you.”
“Well... Brother Zhang, this all started because of me. I can’t just sit by and do nothing. I’ll stay here and watch, and I’ll cover all of the hotel’s losses afterwards,” Chen Yun said hesitantly. He wanted to stay and look for a chance to kill the boss—after all, monsters were everywhere, but bosses were rare. Now that he’d finally encountered one, the temptation was overwhelming. What did bosses mean in games? Tons of experience, heaps of gold, rare items, and excellent gear.
“No way. That Catfish Demon is too dangerous. Even if I stay, I can’t let you stay. If anything happens to you, President Jiang will have my hide. Sorry, Xiao Chen. Li Xin, Xiao Wang, Xiao Li—you three escort Master Chen out of the hotel, and don’t let him return until the danger is over!”
And so, by President Zhang’s orders, Chen Yun was forcibly dragged out of the hotel by the three of them. He didn’t resist, but sighed regretfully—this boss just wasn’t meant for him.

Soon, more than a dozen police cars arrived with sirens blaring. Over thirty heavily armed SWAT officers poured out, real guns at the ready. In this world, where cultivators existed, so did monstrous spirits, so the police weren’t surprised by the call—they’d dealt with similar incidents before and had specialized procedures for them.
“Captain Li, the Catfish Demon is in the hotel’s back kitchen. Be careful—it’s huge,” President Zhang said to the SWAT leader at the entrance.
“Understood.” Captain Li nodded, then addressed his team: “Team One, evacuate the civilians. Team Two, secure the entrances—no one goes in. Teams Three, Four, and Five—move in and terminate the Catfish Demon on sight.”
“Yes, sir!”
“President Zhang, prepare yourself—the hotel kitchen will probably need a complete overhaul. A rampaging demon spirit is terrifying—it’s not necessarily weaker than a cultivator,” Captain Li said.
“I was prepared for that the moment I called the police,” President Zhang replied with a bitter smile.
“Can you walk me through what happened?” Captain Li asked, heading upstairs with President Zhang at his side.
“Of course. Here’s what happened—Master Chen stir-fried a plate of tomato and eggs...” President Zhang briefly recounted the events.
The more Captain Li listened, the stranger his expression became. Eventually, he stopped in his tracks. “Are you saying that an ordinary catfish turned into a demon after eating Master Chen’s stir-fried tomato and eggs?”
