Chapter 114: Entering the Hive
“Hey, thank goodness the big brother phone has unlimited durability; otherwise, this would have been really troublesome.”
-35, -40... A series of damage numbers floated up. Before long, the window’s durability was completely shattered. Chen Yun leapt through the opening.
“Player Ye Ming’s mental power is 20, greater than 15; immune to mental toxin status.” As soon as he entered, Chen Yun received a system prompt.
Mental toxin? Chen Yun was momentarily taken aback, then realized that the game’s dungeon entry requirement of mental power 20 was designed for this very purpose.
In the movie, the Red Queen used mental toxins to incapacitate everyone in the hive, causing them all to fall unconscious. Alice’s temporary amnesia was also due to this mental toxin. So that system prompt about mental power 20 was related to this effect.
This corridor led to the entrance down to the train below. Chen Yun gripped the big brother phone cautiously as he made his way toward the end; he knew the assault squad would enter the hive from here.
Meanwhile, the Red Queen, the second major boss in Resident Evil overseeing the entire situation, looked at this intruder with puzzlement.
With advanced intelligence, the Red Queen instantly scanned global population records but could not find any identity matching the intruder.
“Interesting—a little mouse has come running. No matter, all are pawns on my chessboard. Today, not one of you will survive,” the Red Queen’s image flickered on the screen, her sinister smile chilling.
“I’ll pretend to be unconscious here. The assault squad will surely find me. Thanks to the mental toxin’s memory-erasing effect, otherwise, I couldn’t explain my origins,” Chen Yun found a noticeable spot and lay down, feigning unconsciousness.
After a while, the howling wind outside stirred Ye Ming’s spirit. They’re here—the assault squad has arrived!
Everything unfolded just as in the movie. The assault squad discovered and took control of the heroine Alice and her brother Matt Addison. When they reached the corridor’s end, they found Chen Yun ‘unconscious.’
James Shred, the assault squad leader, waved his hand, and the squad members instantly raised their guns, aiming at Chen Yun.
“Captain, our intel doesn’t include this person,” Chad Kaplan said, glancing at his wrist computer.
“I’ll wake him up,” James Shred ordered. “Everyone else, stay alert.”
Chen Yun, kicked by James Shred, ‘groggily’ woke up and, seeing James who looked exactly like the one in the movie, put on a confused expression.
“Who are you? State your name,” James Shred asked, pointing at Chen Yun.
---
“What did you say?” Chen Yun, drawing on Oscar-worthy acting skills, replied, “Where is this?”
“State your name!” James Shred pressed, pushing Chen Yun against the wall.
“I…I don’t know…” Chen Yun feigned confusion.
“Sir, the building’s active defense system has been activated. He’s likely still under the toxin’s side effects,” Chad Kaplan reported.
“Alright, what about those two?” James Shred asked, releasing Chen Yun.
“They’re under control. Should we lock them up?” the female squad member, Rain, inquired.
“No, we’re taking them with us,” James said. “Prepare to enter the research facility.”
Pressed down by the squad, the three exchanged glances and reluctantly accepted the situation.
They boarded the train through the passage, heading deep inside the hive. Chen Yun behaved obediently with no oversteps. To him, all these squad members were enigmas, their weapons terrifying—with attack powers exceeding 1500. Chen Yun estimated that any single weapon could easily kill him.
Along the way, Spence Parks was rescued. Like Alice, he temporarily lost his memory.
“We’ll enter through the side door. Rain, open it,” James looked around upon arrival and said to Chen Yun and the others, “Stick close. I can’t guarantee your safety.”
“Listen, I want to know who you really are. And what exactly is going on here?” Alice couldn’t contain herself any longer.
“We’re all hired by the same employer…” James hesitated briefly, “We work for the Umbrella Corporation. The building above us is the entrance to the hive, and you are security guarding that entrance.”
“What is this then?” Alice removed the ring from her finger.
“You’re not married. That ring is just a symbol indicating your protection of the hive’s secrets.”
“What is the hive?” Spence Parks suddenly asked.
“The hive is located deep underground beneath Raccoon City. It’s a top-secret research facility overseen and owned by Umbrella. Over 500 researchers live and work underground here. Their work is vital to the company, but the nature of their research is classified,” James explained.
---
“Why can’t I remember anything?” Chen Yun suddenly interrupted, stealing Spence’s line.
“The hive has its own defense mechanisms, all controlled by computers. A neural toxin gas was released in the building. Its primary effect is to render those who inhale it completely unconscious for four hours. Side effects vary but can cause memory loss—just like you three,” James said.
“How long does it last?” Spence Parks asked.
“It depends on the person—an hour, a day, a week, or even longer,” James answered.
“So you’re saying this place was attacked?” Spence pressed.
“No, the situation is probably worse,” James said gravely.
“Sir, we’ve cleared the passage to the hive,” Rain reported as she approached.
“Good. Everyone stay alert and cautious. Let’s move,” James nodded.
As the story unfolded methodically, Chen Yun stayed close to Alice, who, despite her amnesia, remained wary. She knew better than to trust easily, so she viewed this unfamiliar young man with suspicion.
“B Cafeteria—that’s what the map says. But… where does this look like a cafeteria? Do the staff eat inside those huge pillars? And what are those pipes for?” Chad Kaplan looked around the room filled with large columns, puzzled.
“This definitely isn’t a cafeteria. You must have misread the name,” J.D. Salinas laughed.
“Maybe the company is hiding some secrets here,” Spence Parks said solemnly, “Some secrets you don’t know about.”
“JD, you stay here to guard them, watch the exit,” James said, his gaze hardening at the mention of secrets. He knew things others didn’t. This was Umbrella’s secret research facility, dedicated to developing biochemical weapons.
