Chapter 73: You're Doomed—You've Fallen in Love
Facing Jiang Yunqi’s reproach, Chu Fei adhered strictly to his principle of never troubling himself when he could blame someone else. He turned the tables with a classic bit of emotional manipulation.
“My phone died last night,” he said, feigning hurt. “As soon as I charged it, I got in touch with you. I didn’t expect you to accuse me right off the bat, even saying I was giving you the silent treatment. Jiang Yunqi, you’ve really let me down!”
Caught off guard by Chu Fei’s counterattack, Jiang Yunqi faltered. All she could manage was a timid reply, “How was I supposed to know your phone was dead? I thought maybe you were ignoring me because it’s my time of the month…”
“Do you really think I’m such a lecher that all I care about is that kind of thing?” Chu Fei frowned.
“Yes!” Jiang Yunqi replied with surprising conviction. Even Zhou Mi, sitting beside her, raised both hands in agreement.
Chu Fei was left speechless. What was with these women, wronging him so unjustly? He wasn’t old, not at all!
“So what have you been doing since last night, anyway?” Jiang Yunqi pressed when Chu Fei didn’t answer.
Chu Fei was about to respond but caught himself and decided to bait her instead. “Why should I tell you? What are we to each other?”
“We’re… lip friends?” She played on words, but Chu Fei pretended not to catch the pun.
“If we’re just friends, then I don’t owe you any explanations about my life, do I?”
“What if we were boyfriend and girlfriend?” she asked.
“Are you saying you want to be my girlfriend?”
Chu Fei could feel her breath quicken through the phone. Clearly, Jiang Yunqi was nervous. Then he heard the distinct sound of her slapping her own cheek, which made him chuckle. This girl was just too adorable.
Regaining her composure, Jiang Yunqi hurried to change the subject. “By the way, did you see today’s trending topic on Weibo? That mysterious man from behind is so handsome—I already followed him!”
Chu Fei laughed. “I’m the one they’re talking about. How could I not know?”
“Oh, stop it. I only believe half of what you say now!” She obviously didn’t buy it.
“And what if I really am that mysterious man?”
“If you are, I’ll give you my head on a platter!”
Chu Fei laughed even more boldly. “What would I do with your head? I’ve never liked pork’s head meat.”
“You’re the pig-headed one! Hmph!” Jiang Yunqi shot back, then her tone turned worried. “I heard from classmates in Cloud City that the head of the Jiang family is coming to Dragon City. I’m worried he might do something to you—please be careful!”
Chu Fei dismissed her concern. “Don’t worry. If they dare mess with me, I’ll show them what it means to bow to no one but Chu Fei’s strength!”
“So when are we meeting again?” Jiang Yunqi asked.
“I’m busy tonight and tomorrow. What’s the rush? We have all the time in the world,” Chu Fei replied.
At that moment, Fang Chang, piloting the helicopter, shivered inexplicably. What was that? Who’s talking about spending the night with me? And since when does that come free?
Chu Fei, engrossed in his conversation with Jiang Yunqi, had no idea what wild thoughts Fang Chang was imagining.
They chatted for a long while before agreeing on a time to meet next. Then Chu Fei hung up.
Back at the dorm, Roman and Guan Ya had been staring at the bathroom door for half an hour, wondering what on earth Jiang Yunqi was doing inside for so long. At last, she emerged, cheeks flushed and eyes sparkling, her face still dewy, set off by her pink hair, making her look both enchanting and alluring.
Anyone who knew her would guess she’d just taken a phone call. Anyone who didn’t might well suspect something else.
“Were you watching something naughty in there? Why is your face so red?” Roman teased.
Jiang Yunqi glanced guiltily at Guan Ya, then answered, “No, it was Chu Fei calling me!”
On the surface, Guan Ya remained calm, but inside she was feeling a little sour. Why did he only call Qiqi and not her? He hadn’t messaged her these past days, either. Should she take the initiative?
“Just a phone call and you’re this flustered…” Roman sighed. “Jiang Yunqi, you’re doomed—you’ve fallen in love!”
As Jiang Yunqi had mentioned, at that very moment, the head of the Jiang family, Jiang Longtan—the hall master of the Cloud City branch of the Martial Alliance—had already arrived at Dragon City’s municipal hospital. Seeing his second son with a broken leg and his eldest son seriously wounded and unconscious, Jiang Longtan was furious. Ever since becoming a hall master of the alliance, no one had dared humiliate the Jiang family like this, especially not in a backwater like Dragon City, where there wasn’t even a Martial Lord to speak of. This was truly a case of a tiger fallen to the plain, bullied by dogs!
“Father, you must avenge my brother and me! Kill that Chu!” Jiang Yangrong snarled, his face twisted with hatred. Not only had Chu Fei stolen Jiang Yunqi from him, he had also beaten his brother into this state. He had to pay.
He’d already devised a plan—when Chu Fei fell into his hands, he’d use him to threaten Jiang Yunqi into submission. After a lifetime of playing the devoted suitor, this beating had awakened the darkness in Jiang Yangrong’s heart. Now, he was determined to embrace it.
“A nobody like him—I’ll make sure he understands the price of offending the Jiang family!” Jiang Longtan growled, barking orders at the steward.
“Find out where this Chu Fei is. Don’t make a move yet—wait until I can bring him before my sons to answer for himself!”
With a respectful nod, the steward withdrew.
“Keke, that Chu Fei is doomed. Master Jiang holds a golden badge, after all!” Xixi, having overheard, shook his head in sympathy for the young man.
But Keke ignored him, glued to her phone and engrossed in the latest gossip about Zhou Mi.
“Keke, did you hear me? That Chu Fei is finished!” Xixi called out again.
She finally looked up, pointing excitedly at the Weibo page. “This man is so handsome! He’s so attractive I almost lost my wits, just like Emperor Gaozong’s widow lost Li Zhi!”
“What’s so handsome about a back view?”
“It’s what he did—risking everything to protect the woman he loves. I want a boyfriend like that someday!” Keke’s eyes sparkled with starry admiration.
Seeing her so smitten, Xixi rolled his eyes. “I’m trying to talk business, and you’re lost in a fangirl fantasy?”
“What business?”
“I’m saying Chu Fei is in trouble. And I’ve been thinking—could the Chu Fei we ran into, the one who injured the Jiang family, be your fiancé?”
“If he is, all the better,” Keke sneered. “If Jiang Longtan kills him, I won’t have to worry about the engagement anymore!”
As the two were talking, Jiang Longtan approached, respectfully addressing them. “Thank you both for your help. Allow me to host a banquet in your honor.”
“No need for formalities, Master Jiang,” Keke replied, her expression suddenly serious. “This concerns the Martial Alliance’s reputation. Please, do not let that country bumpkin off lightly!”
“Rest assured, miss,” Jiang Longtan replied solemnly. “He will not leave here alive.”
That even the mighty hall master treated these two women with such deference spoke volumes about their extraordinary status.
At ten o’clock that night, in a villa, Song Yalan stood resplendent in a blue cheongsam, as stunning as ever. Her breathtaking figure and flawless features left the hired assassin parched with desire, wishing he could have her right then and there.
Song Yalan detested the way he looked at her. If not for the need to ambush Chu Fei, she’d never have shared a room with this man.
The assassin, growing impatient, leered at her. “President Song, I doubt that kid will dare show up. With a night as beautiful as this, why don’t we do something more pleasurable instead?”
