Chapter 172: Explanation
Tang Ruotong smiled as she watched Wang Chen and the other two playfully bicker, a trace of envy hidden deep within her eyes.
She knew that although she had joined this team, she was still a long way from reaching the kind of bond shared by Wang Chen and Long Wushuang.
After a brief bout of horseplay, Wang Chen suddenly said, "Right, let's use this opportunity for me to explain why I have this kind of strength."
He glanced at Wu Jiajie, who was waiting nearby, offered him an apology, and then pulled the other two to a slightly more secluded spot to talk.
"Fatty, didn't you used to wonder why I was leveling up so fast?"
"Huh? Wasn't it because you awakened the Necromancer God class?" Long Wushuang asked doubtfully.
"Teacher Long's skill at playing dumb has improved significantly lately," Wang Chen teased.
"Wasn't it because of that skill called 'Mist in the Five Miles'?" Tang Ruotong asked. "We all know about it already."
Wang Chen nodded upon hearing this. "That's part of the reason. But what I really want to talk about is the ability that allowed me to obtain this skill."
"The ability to obtain skills? That sounds so convoluted," Long Wushuang scratched his head. "This skill probably isn't a Life Shaman skill; it must be learned from a skill book. What kind of ability does that require?"
"It requires luck," Wang Chen smiled mysteriously. "I didn't buy this skill book from the trading house; I dropped it while grinding monsters."
Tang Ruotong gasped in surprise, "Then you're really lucky! Such a powerful grinding skill was actually a drop?"
She had originally assumed that since the skill was so useful, the price of the skill book must have been astronomical, and she had wondered where Wang Chen got so much money.
After all, having been classmates for three years, Tang Ruotong was well aware of Wang Chen's family background.
If he had managed to drop it purely through good luck, then everything made sense.
"Chenzi, I still don't get it," Long Wushuang's expression was somewhat puzzled. "Is your ability just pure luck?"
"That's right." A flash crossed Wang Chen's fingertips, and he placed all the equipment he had farmed in the secret realm onto the ground.
"Fatty, take out the equipment you farmed too, and let's see what the difference is."
When farming monsters in the secret realm, whoever killed the monster got to hold the loot first.
Because clearing the score was the top priority, none of the three paid much attention to experience points and dropped items at the time. They had even turned off the prompt sounds of their class panels, focusing solely on absolute concentration.
Tang Ruotong didn't have a storage ring, so she had asked Wang Chen to hold her equipment for her first.
"Tang Ruotong, take a look. These pieces of equipment were dropped by you, right?"
Wang Chen pointed to a silver-grade short blade, a wild boar leather jacket, and a silver-grade dagger on the ground.
There were also some bronze-grade, mediocre pieces of equipment.
Tang Ruotong identified them and nodded.
Wang Chen separated those items and then organized the equipment he himself had dropped in the secret realm.
Now, three piles of equipment were displayed on the ground, corresponding to what each of the three individuals had farmed.
"Compare the equipment you farmed with mine and see what the difference is," Wang Chen said.
Although Long Wushuang and Tang Ruotong had no idea what was going on, they trusted Wang Chen and picked up the equipment to inspect it.
Soon, they discovered something strange.
"Hey, Chenzi, all the equipment you farmed actually has bonus skills," Long Wushuang exclaimed in wonder.
Hearing this, Tang Ruotong also picked up Wang Chen's equipment to inspect it, and found that it was indeed the case.
"Only a few pieces of the equipment I farmed have bonus skills," Tang Ruotong marveled, "whereas yours all do."
A brilliant light flickered in her beautiful eyes. "Is this the luck you were talking about?"
"Yes," Wang Chen nodded. "I once received a special blessing from the Fairy race, and that blessing endowed me with extraordinary luck."
"That's why, when I grind monsters, I am able to drop good equipment and even skill books, allowing me to sustain my battles through combat and level up at flying speeds."
"Holy shit! Why didn't you say so earlier!" Long Wushuang excitedly threw an arm around Wang Chen's shoulder. "From now on, you'll be picking up all the drops!"
Tang Ruotong was also very happy, as this meant their team's future leveling career would yield far more rewards than anyone else's.
"Chenzi, how did you get that blessing? Can you hook me up with one too?" Long Wushuang asked.
"Uh... you'll have to work for that yourself. Tag along with me to the Fairy Blessed Land when I have time next," Wang Chen said awkwardly.
"The Fairy Blessed Land? The Dark Plateau from before?" Long Wushuang asked doubtfully. "It seems like that secret realm can't be entered anymore, and many humans have been repatriated."
"Don't worry, just follow me and you'll get in, plus there's nectar wine to drink!" Wang Chen smiled.
"Good grief!" Long Wushuang beamed from ear to ear.
"I've realized that you are now essentially the Goodwill Ambassador to Non-Human Races. Not only did you manage to get the Wind-Hunting Bow from the Wind-Hunting clan, but you also have deep ties with the Fairy race."
Long Wushuang sighed with emotion, "If you tell me one day in the future that you're raising a dragon, I won't even be surprised."
Uh... would you be surprised if I raised a Vajra Vulture that eats dragons? Wang Chen felt a bit sheepish.
He still had many things to tell Long Wushuang; he had experienced far too much in this short period of time.
However, it would have to wait for another day. He had to go somewhere else next and simply didn't have the time.
By then, no doubt Long Wushuang would be left marveling all over again.
...
Wang Chen waved goodbye to Long Wushuang and the two of them agreed to meet again tomorrow at the Supervisory Council.
Wang Chen got into Wu Jiajie's car, heading towards the Luzhou Association of Professionals hall. There, Wang Chen's safety would be guaranteed.
Taking advantage of a red light, Wu Jiajie glanced at Wang Chen in the back seat and smiled, "You and your friends have a really great bond."
Then he sighed with some sentiment, "It's been so long since I last gathered with my friends from school. Next time I have some free time, I should see if I can get them together for some gaming."
Wang Chen smiled, "There will be a chance, as long as someone takes the initiative."
He looked out the window. It was nearly evening now, and the people on the streets were all hurrying along, presumably rushing home to have dinner.
Wang Chen let out a barely audible sigh.
In the end, he still had to fabricate a lie to explain his peculiar strength to Long Wushuang.
Wang Chen had originally intended to tell Long Wushuang the truth. He believed that after spending so many years together, he had thoroughly understood Long Wushuang's character.
As long as he asked Long Wushuang to keep it a secret, even if someone tortured him to death, Long Wushuang would never leak his secret.
However, ever since Wang Chen encountered the Blood Shadow residing inside the body of the Deep Pool Xuan Toad in Old Smoker's Jungle, he had changed his mind.
The professional abilities in this world were bizarre and unpredictable; perhaps there were professionals who could extract memories or read minds just like the Blood Shadow.
In that case, even if Long Wushuang kept his lips sealed tight, it would be of no use.
And it might even bring down some disaster upon Wang Chen because of the system he possessed.
Therefore, after much deliberation, Wang Chen ultimately decided to use the excuse of the Fairy Blessing.
Just as the Fairy elder had said, the way vitality overflows is something they do not know.
So if Wang Chen simply insisted that his luck had been amplified, what could possibly be wrong with that?
His thoughts flashed past along with the scenery outside the window, and Wang Chen and his companion soon arrived at the Association of Professionals.
