Chapter 007: After the Founding of the Nation, Animals Are No Longer Allowed to Become Spirits
It was a plump, round ball—a white-furred hamster so fat its limbs were almost invisible.
Bai Chuwei glanced at it with a click of her tongue. “Snowball, I thought you weren’t coming back.”
Snowball let out two squeaks, meaning, “Wherever you go, I’ll follow.”
This white hamster was a little pet she had awakened with a touch of spirit twenty years ago, bored atop Cloudmist Mountain. Who would have thought the creature was so foolish? After twenty years by her side, it was still nothing but a hamster, unable even to transform.
“After the founding of the nation, animals aren’t allowed to become spirits!”
Bai Chuwei said disdainfully, “So that’s why, after twenty years since I awakened you, you’re still just a stupid rodent?”
Just then, a mechanical electronic voice echoed deep in her mind:
[Beep. Plot has begun. Host, please follow the storyline and slap the faces of all those who bullied the original owner.]
[Beep beep beep. System detected irreversible malfunction. Initiating self-repair. Please do not disturb.]
Bai Chuwei was already used to this broken system’s constant malfunctions—likely it’d take another few thousand years to fix, but it wasn’t much use anyway.
She entered the bathroom and enjoyed a comfortable bath, changing out of her clothes and tossing them into the laundry basket, where one of the maids would collect them for washing.
“Knock—knock—knock.”
Bai Yinyin came in after knocking, placing a phone on the table with a cold tone. “Here, your new phone. There’s a fresh SIM card already installed.”
Bai Chuwei took a glance and noticed the corners of the phone were slightly worn, her brows furrowing. “It’s used.”
It was clearly an old phone.
Bai Yinyin was startled, unsure how Bai Chuwei had figured it out. She raised her voice in mockery, “So what if it’s used? Have you, a country bumpkin, ever touched a Fruit XR before? Using my old phone is already generous of me.”
Just now, Grandfather’s people had transferred fifteen thousand to her. Of course, that money was used for her own new phone; Bai Chuwei only deserved her cast-off.
With a smug flourish, Bai Yinyin turned and left.
She’d pocketed fifteen thousand!
Her father was unimpressive, no match for her uncle’s family. Her monthly allowance was only ten thousand, so even buying a phone required careful planning.
Bai Yinyin felt no guilt for snatching Bai Chuwei’s new phone—in fact, she was a bit excited.
As she stepped out, she saw the maid taking Bai Chuwei’s clothes from the laundry basket.
Bai Yinyin curled her lip. “Just as expected from the countryside, not a single brand label on her clothes—such a pauper.”
The maid shook her head vigorously, sounding shocked. “Miss, have you seen the threads of this garment? The gold thread is the core—it’s the craftsmanship of brocaded Gold Silk, which only glimmers faintly under sunlight. I saw on TV once, a handbag made with this technique costs thirty to forty thousand; this whole outfit must be worth at least a hundred or two hundred thousand!”
The smile on Bai Yinyin’s face froze. Eyes widening in disbelief, she muttered, “Impossible! She’s just a country girl!”
Her voice abruptly cut off, realization dawning on her.
Either Grandfather or Father must have given it!
Bai Yinyin gritted her teeth, mumbling, “Bai Chuwei, looks like I underestimated you. You haven’t even officially entered the Bai family, and already you’ve got Grandfather and Father wrapped around your finger? Who do you think you are?”
She glanced at the outfit, then remembered the fifteen thousand from WeChat, suddenly feeling her phone purchase wasn’t nearly as satisfying.
“I’ve got it!”
Staring at the brocaded Gold Silk spring attire, Bai Yinyin’s lips curled into a malicious smile. She spun on her heel and dashed to her room to fetch a small pair of scissors…
