Chapter 115: Debts of Romance

Duan Xiuhao truly loved his son, Xu Xingchen, and was filled with guilt toward him as well. Since the child could not be acknowledged openly, he had been forced to take his mother’s surname.
In the end, Duan Xiuhao owed the mother and son far too much.
Seeing the Old Master slowly tear open the envelope, Duan Xiuhao seized the opportunity to draw Xu Xingchen over and say, “Dad, this is the young man I mentioned before, Xu Xingchen. He’s exceptionally talented, and he’s also Xingye’s best friend. Isn’t that right, Xingye?”
Duan Xingye, dressed in a red suit, looked away and gave an awkward laugh without saying a word.
A spark of anger flared in Duan Xiuhao’s heart. What was wrong with this son of his now? Couldn’t he even echo his own father’s words?
“Dad, you may not know this, but Xingye only went up Mount Mistcloud with his fourth uncle to seek the miracle doctor because he listened to Xingchen.”
At that, Old Master Duan lifted his eyes and glanced at Xu Xingchen’s smiling face. He casually remarked, “Good boy.”
Having lived for so many years, the Old Master was naturally adept at making polite remarks.
He did not take the words particularly seriously, however. Young Xu might indeed be a decent fellow, but all he had done was offer a suggestion. In the end, it was Feihan and Xingye who had personally gone to Mount Mistcloud to bring the doctor back. Besides, Xingye was in his final year of high school, a crucial period when every minute and second was precious.
Duan Xiuhao and Xu Xingchen exchanged a glance, their hearts lighting up with joy.
Now that they had made an impression on the Old Master, if they could win his favor, then even if Duan Feihan, the head of the family, refused to agree, Xu Xingchen would still be able to return to the Duan family.

Old Master Duan had already torn open the envelope and taken out a document. He had assumed it was some sort of congratulatory letter, but after taking a closer look at the words on the page, his expression gradually changed. His grip on the document tightened.
“Old Master? Old Master, what’s wrong?” the butler hurriedly called out.
The guests at the banquet watched Old Master Duan with even greater curiosity and concern.
The Old Master was sorely tempted to seize the document and smash it viciously against Duan Xiuhao’s head.
So that was why Duan Xiuhao had kept introducing young men to him? The boy was his illegitimate son?
The document in his hands was a DNA test report. The subjects were Xu Xingchen and his eldest grandson, Duan Xingye.
The two of them were brothers!
Duan Xiuhao caught sight of the document from the corner of his eye, and his face changed instantly. Stammering, he said, “W-Where did this come from?”
The Duan family was under Duan Feihan’s control, and Duan Xiuhao did not dare act too rashly. He had only intended to bring Xu Xingchen before the Old Master on the auspicious occasion of his recovery, make a good impression, and then tell the family a few days later.
Who could have imagined that a DNA test report would suddenly appear—and in full view of everyone at the banquet?
That changed the implications entirely. Would the Old Master think he was forcing him to acknowledge Xingchen as a descendant of the Duan family?
After living for six or seven decades, the thing Old Master Duan hated most was being threatened.

Damn it, which bastard had done this?
Duan Xiuhao cursed inwardly, then suddenly turned his gaze toward Duan Xingye.
It had to be that boy. Last time, he had even deliberately asked where that watch had gone...
What a rotten son. Not beating him senseless while he was still in the womb was the greatest regret of Duan Xiuhao’s life.
Old Master Duan handed the document to Duan Feihan. Having weathered countless storms, the old man forced a smile onto his face and said, “It’s nothing. Just a handwritten letter from an old friend, wishing this old man a speedy recovery.”
After saying this, Old Master Duan shot Duan Xiuhao another vicious glare. Once the banquet was over, he would deal with the mess his eldest son had created with his romantic escapades.
Bai Chuwei sat lazily in a dim corner, watching the show. She reached out and flicked Snowball’s round, plump backside as the little creature gnawed industriously on a French fry.
“Stop eating. It’s time to get to work.”
She was about to give the male lead, Xu Xingchen, a magnificent gift—one that would disgust him to death.
