Chapter 128: Longing...
Huangpu Shenqing said, “But I can’t concern myself with that anymore.”
Lin Yan stared at the call that had just been disconnected, so furious he was nearly beside himself. No one outside dared provoke him, yet when it came to Huangpu Shenqing, he was the one left fuming.
“Big Brother, what about Second Brother?”
Ouyang Mufeng and Gong Yi stood nearby, anxiously waiting for news from Lin Yan.
“The reason he used those private weapons is that Di Jiuzhuo drugged Sister-in-law. She’s still unconscious, and he’s forcing Di Jiuzhuo to prepare an antidote.”
“But he still can’t use forbidden weapons! Has Second Brother gone mad? What are we going to do? The World Council will certainly punish him now. What should we do?”
Gong Yi, however, remained calm. He knew all too well what Shangguan Ranran meant to Huangpu Shenqing. She was his life—like a lost rib he had finally found after sixteen years.
“Let’s gather some information first and see how the Council intends to deal with this.”
Lin Yan nodded. “I’ll set out immediately to find out. You two go keep an eye on Huangpu. Don’t let him act recklessly again.”
They all knew that whenever Shangguan Ranran was involved, Huangpu Shenqing lost every trace of reason. Even so, they had to do what they could—and stop him by every means available.
That afternoon, Lin Yan flew by private jet to the United Nations.
Ouyang Mufeng and Gong Yi flew to Country M.
Kimir Hospital
Ye Xin gazed at her sister lying in the hospital bed, deeply troubled.
She did not know whether she should inform the old master. She was afraid of making him worry, yet she also wanted to notify Shangguan Xing and Ye Xi. But if they came, they could do nothing except fret helplessly. Unable to make up her mind, she could only remain there in anguish.
From the previous night until now, countless specialists had emerged from the intensive-care ward, shaking their heads in frustration. Their conclusions were always the same: her body was not in danger, all her vital functions were perfectly healthy, and yet she simply would not wake up.
Ye Xin was so anxious that she was on the verge of tears.
Mo Jiu handed her a boxed meal. “Sister Ye, eat something first. You need to conserve your strength so you can take better care of Sister Shangguan.”
Ye Xin accepted it and quietly thanked him. After only a few bites, she could eat no more.
She stepped out of the ward and took out her phone. Just as she was about to call, someone blocked her view.
Mo Shi said, “Sister Ye, Master has already gone to find the antidote. It would be better not to contact Sister Shangguan’s family yet, lest they worry.”
Ye Xin’s brows remained furrowed. “I’ve considered that too, but I’m worried about her…”
“Trust Master. He won’t let Sister Shangguan fall into danger.”
Ye Xin nodded and put away her phone. In her heart, she prayed that Huangpu Shenqing would find the antidote soon. She wanted to see the lively, spirited woman she knew—not her sister lying alone and helpless in a hospital bed.
Huangpu Shenqing returned to the hospital at noon and summoned every specialist for a discussion. Yet every answer they gave him was the same:
“She still needs further observation.”
“More research is necessary.”
“We have to wait and see how the patient responds.”
“We need more time to deliberate.”
His bloodlust surged. “If you can’t find the cause, you can all remain in Country M and grow old there.”
Huangpu Shenqing slammed the door behind him and left. If he stayed any longer, he could not guarantee what he might do.
The specialists from every branch of medicine were furious.
They had been dragged there in the dead of night, only to be treated with such a vile attitude. Their anger was almost impossible to contain.
Still, they only dared seethe inwardly. Outwardly, they continued earnestly searching for the cause of the patient’s condition.
After all, one had to bow one’s head beneath another’s roof.
“Master.”
Mo Jiu and Mo Shi rose to their feet.
“You two, go outside for now.”
“Yes.”
Mo Jiu and Mo Shi quietly left the ward. Ye Xin also withdrew in silence, leaving the room to him.
“Ranran…”
The man took the young woman’s hand and pressed it against his cheek. Sorrow, tenderness, pain, and countless other emotions mingled across his face.
“What should I do?”
He was truly afraid—afraid that they would fail to produce an antidote, afraid that they would be unable to cure her, and even more afraid that she might never wake up.
He held her hand tightly, hoping to give her warmth and feel her presence through her touch.
Yet the young woman lay quietly on the hospital bed, her beautiful dark eyes tightly shut, her rosebud lips pale. None of her usual coquettishness, temper, or vitality remained. Her long, waterfall-like hair accentuated the delicate loveliness of her face, while the oversized hospital gown made her appear all the more frail.
Suddenly, a sheen of cold sweat appeared on her forehead. Her breathing quickened, and the hand he held began to move restlessly. It seemed she was about to wake.
Delight flashed through Huangpu Shenqing’s eyes. Lowering his voice to a gentle murmur, he called, “Ranran. Ranran.”
Shangguan Ranran felt as though she had fallen into a blazing furnace, its temperature rising without end. Even the depths of her throat burned painfully, and she desperately wanted to…
“Ranran, Ranran, how do you feel? Where does it hurt? I’ll call the doctor.”
Shangguan Ranran opened her eyes with difficulty and caught hold of the hand he was about to withdraw.
“Ranran, what is it?”
He sat down beside the bed and carefully helped her upright.
“I…I feel terrible. Mr. Huangpu…Mr. Huangpu, what is happening to me…ah…”
Shangguan Ranran clutched at her throat in distress. She felt awful.
Her throat was unbearably dry. She wanted to…
“Ranran, don’t frighten me. Be good, let go. Where does it hurt? Tell me.”
The man seized both her hands so she could not injure herself, then gathered her into his arms and comforted her with tender care.
He did not realize that his embrace made Shangguan Ranran’s very soul tremble. His long, slender neck was only inches from her face, its delicate, bony contours revealing the veins beneath his skin and the blood flowing through them. She felt as though her entire body were about to explode. She wanted to…
“Quickly…let…let me go…”
Something inside her seemed to be tormenting her. She wanted to…
Unable to control herself, she bit down on his slender neck, her teeth sinking in with tremendous force.
The man was only slightly startled. Then he pulled her fiercely into his arms, holding her as though he would meld her into his very bones. His voice was gentle to the core.
“Don’t be afraid, Ranran. I’ll find the antidote for you, no matter what it costs.”
Shangguan Ranran clung desperately to his neck until she tasted blood. Only then did clarity return to her eyes.
Fearfully, she began to cry. His blood stained her lips, and against her pallid face, they were startlingly red.
“How…how did I become…like this?”
Blood still seeped from the man’s neck. The snowy skin was marked by a sudden, glaring crimson that was shocking to behold. Yet he merely drew her back into his arms, seemingly unaware of the pain.
“Good girl, Ranran. It’s all right. Sleep for a while, and you’ll be fine.”
“Will you go to sleep?”
“Be good. Just sleep for a while, and you’ll be fine.”
Whether from fright, exhaustion, or the influence of Huangpu Shenqing, she soon fell back into a deep sleep.
