Chapter 113: It Was Only For Her After All
The couple from the Jun family in the audience were utterly shocked. Could this really have been done by their obedient and sensible daughter?
Jun Ruocheng knew that his younger sister enjoyed a lively social life, but he never imagined she would commit such criminal acts.
The presiding judge angrily hammered the gavel. “Silence! From now on, the plaintiff, Miss Jun Rui, shall be deprived of the right to speak. The defense attorney will represent her.”
“Next, I invite the defendant, Miss Shangguan Renyan, to present the evidence against Miss Jun Rui in court.”
Shangguan Renyan’s lawyers from the Shangguan Group submitted the prearranged documents: photos, videos, audio recordings of family testimonies, and written statements from the victims, handing them over one by one.
Everyone in the courtroom, upon reviewing the evidence, was filled with outrage. Such a malignant threat to society deserved the harshest punishment—death would not be an injustice.
The judge struck the gavel with solemn authority, his angry voice ringing in everyone’s ears. “I hereby declare that all statements made by the defendant, Miss Shangguan Renyan, are true. From this moment, Miss Shangguan Renyan shall be the plaintiff, and Miss Jun Rui the defendant. Now, the defendant’s counsel may defend their client.”
“I don’t believe it! It must be false! I was so careful—how could you possibly know?” Jun Rui screamed at Shangguan Renyan, her face twisted in fury. Her swollen visage made her look even more terrifying, like a man-eating tiger.
Upon hearing her admission, the crowd was dumbfounded, utterly shocked.
Shangguan Renyan’s cold voice sounded again. “So, that means it’s all true?”
Only then did Jun Rui realize what she had said. Overcome with rage, she shouted, “Damn you, wretched bitch! How dare you do this to me? I’ll make you suffer worse than death, you filthy woman...”
“Silence! Miss Jun Rui has repeatedly challenged the dignity of this court. Now that the evidence is indisputable, we shall proceed accordingly. I hereby sentence Miss Jun Rui to life imprisonment and order her to compensate all victims.”
“As for Miss Shangguan Renyan, due to her meritorious reporting and in consideration of the assault she endured from Miss Jun Rui, the charge of intentional injury against her is hereby dismissed.”
—
“Mr. Huang Pu, am I good?” The little girl sat in the car, her tone proud, like a child seeking praise.
“Yes, very good,” Huang Pu said affectionately, his compliments sincere and unreserved.
The Shangguan Group’s lawyers... could they be better? They hadn’t even been needed. This was by far the easiest lawsuit ever won!
Huang Pu affectionately took the girl to join them for lunch to celebrate Shangguan Renyan’s courtroom victory.
After eating, Ouyang Muya returned to the office, choosing not to stay with them. Once she knew Shangguan Renyan had won, she felt relieved.
Upon arriving at the company, she received a call from Xia Wanqing.
—
“Muya?”
“What is it, Wanqing?”
“Nothing much, just wondering if you’ve eaten yet?”
Ouyang Muya glanced at her watch. It was nearly one o’clock.
“Yes, I’ve eaten.”
“Really? I wanted to have a meal with you.”
“Well, let’s do dinner then.”
“Sure!” Wanqing agreed eagerly, then quickly asked, “Were you busy at the office this morning?”
“No, actually this morning I...” Muya suddenly trailed off.
On the other end, Wanqing was waiting expectantly but was surprised by the silence. She urged impatiently, “What happened this morning?”
“Wanqing, are you asking about Renyan?”
Caught off guard, Wanqing’s face flushed with embarrassment. “I’m not! I have work to do. I have to go now.”
Ouyang Muya shook her head helplessly as the call was cut off. Clearly, Wanqing wanted to know about Renyan but was too stubborn to admit it.
She quickly typed a message and sent it.
Wanqing, still restless and regretful, heard her phone ring. She saw the message from Muya:
“Renyan is doing well. She won the case. Jun Rui has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Don’t worry.”
Wanqing set her phone down, mumbling under her breath, “Who’s worried?”
—
At the Jun residence,
Jun Ruohan was furious upon learning that Jun Rui had been sentenced.
“Aunt, you have to save Rui’er. She...” Mrs. Jun sobbed, pleading with Jun Ruohan.
“How can I save her? She committed so many crimes! How could I? Haven’t I told you all to keep quiet? Quiet! It’s been so little time and yet she’s caused such a huge mess again. Isn’t the Jun family chaotic enough already?” Jun Ruohan was frustrated, her anger burning inside with no outlet. That damned Huang Pu, that despicable woman—both dead—and now her grandson was tormenting her life. Her earlier years had been smooth sailing; now, in old age, peace eluded her.
Her well-maintained face, once flawless, now bore intentionally distinct wrinkles from anger. No matter how much makeup she wore, the passage of years had loosened her skin.
“All right, enough crying. What kind of behavior is that? Jun Rui’s fate cannot be changed now. The priority is how to cover the company’s losses,” the stern voice of the family patriarch boomed. Seated in the main chair, his hair mostly white, the weight of years could not soften his stern demeanor.
Mrs. Jun was the first to object. Her daughter was her flesh and blood—how could she let her spend the rest of her life in prison?
She wept and pleaded, “Father? Are you really going to abandon Rui’er like this? Is she to spend her entire life behind bars?”
“What do you suggest? Losing the lawsuit is one thing, but she dragged herself down too. I didn’t even know your good daughter had done so many terrible things. All the evidence is presented. What am I supposed to do, as an old man?” The patriarch was infuriated, barely willing to acknowledge her as his granddaughter—a useless one at that.
“Big brother, don’t be angry. Please sit,” Jun Ruohan comforted him.
“Father, please don’t be upset.”
“Grandfather, take care of yourself. Mother, please say less,” Jun Ruocheng comforted his mother, knowing well that his sister’s fate was sealed.
Mrs. Jun could only sit on the sofa, sobbing softly.
“Hmph,” the patriarch snorted, anger and frustration evident.
“Ruohan, is it true that the one suing Rui’er is really from the Shangguan Group?”
Jun Ruohan lifted her eyes, her voice laced with disdain and self-mockery. “Big brother, she’s not only from the Shangguan Group; she’s the daughter of Shangguan Xing, the legitimate heiress of the Shangguan family.”
“What?”
“What?”
“How is that possible?”
Voices of disbelief and doubt filled the room, the truth hard to fathom.
“Big brother, do you know why Huang Pu suddenly targeted both the Bai family and the Jun family? Though we’ve long been estranged by hatred, he had remained inactive for years. But when Shangguan Renyan was injured, he struck both our families fiercely. Do you think he did it for himself? No, it was all for her.”
“They... Huang Pu and Shangguan Renyan—how did they come together?” Jun Ruocheng’s father pondered deeply.
